Racing and touring version of the Amstel Gold Race
The Amstel Gold Race is the most important one-day professional cycling events in the Netherlands. On April 17, 2016 the 51th edition of the Amstel Gold Race will take place. Since 2009, the event is part of the UCI world tour. The Amstel Gold Race for professionals is happening every year in South Limburg. However, also 12,000 hobby cyclists are welcome to participate in the Amstel Gold Race. Many of them spend the night on the Mechelerhof! The Amstel Gold Race for hobby cyclists will take place in 2016 on the 15th and 16th of April. As every year participants can follow the paths of the Amstel Gold Race. They can choose from a distance of 60 km, 100 km, 125 km, 150 km, 200 km up to 240 km. The cyclists will pass, as every year, the Buitenplaats de Mechelerhof. The market in Maastricht will be on April 17, 2016 at 10.15h the starting point of the professional race. Of the Amstel Gold Race. The finish of the Amstel Gold Race is located in Valkenburg and is expected at around 16:30h. The start as well as the finish of the touring version will both be located in Valkenburg, to be precise: Amstel Gold Race Xperience Plenkerstraat 50, 6301 GM Valkenburg aan de Geul. History of the Amstel Gold Race
On October, 20th 2010 Herman Krott died, who had organized the Amstel Race since 1966. In 1996 his friend and former race cyclist Leo van Vliet followed his footsteps. Since 2005 the Amstel Gold Race finishes in the city Valkenburg aan de Geul. From 2005 until 2012 the finish of the professional race was on the top of the Cauberg, the mountain in Valkenburg, however this has been moved in 2013 1,8 km further to the Rijksweg te Vilt. Famous cyclists like Eddie Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Joop Zoetemelk, Erik Zabel, Michael Boogerd and of course the legend Jan Raas have finished the classical bike race, the Amstel Gold Race!
