Caves of St. Pietersberg

Experience adventure at one of the extraordinary caves of Maastricht

The Caves of St. Pietersberg stem from the reclamation of marl. In the course of time an extraordinary labyrinth has formed over 20.000 corridors! Two of these corridors are open to the public. Together with a ‘VVV’ guide you can take a tour of about an hour, by which the history comes back to life.The temperature in the caves is 9 – 10 degrees, it is therefore advised you bring a sweater, a vest or a jacket.

Municipal Cave of Valkenburg

In Valkenburg, or actually under Valkenburg is an absolutely fascinating world. It is the Gemeentegro or the Municipal Cave of Valkenburg. The reclamation of this cave was started about 2000 years ago when the Romans needed the marl from the soil as a building material. You are faced with the forces of nature. If you're in Limburg, you should visit the Municipal Cave in Valkenburg. Timely notification of groups and companies is desirable.

Coalmine

Discover the world of mining in a mysterious environment underground. During the tour you will see a promotional video of the state mines of the sixties, the tour is done by an ex-miner who takes you into the world of coal mining. Each guide shows with his own personal story the atmosphere of the time. This is further reinforced by the demonstrations of mining machinery. Smell the atmosphere of the past and visit the museum with chalk and carboniferous fossils.

Opening hours:
April 1 to November 1
Daily tours, at least every hour and start on the hour, from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs
A tour takes about 75 minutes including a film about the mining industry.

November 1 t / m the Christmas holidays
Daily tours at 12:00, 13:30 and 15:00

After the Christmas holidays until April 1
Mon / Fri: guided tour at 14:00. During the weekend and spring break tours at 12:00, 13:30, 15:00

The coal mine is closed on Christmas Day, New Year's and Carnival Sunday and Monday.

Castle Ruins Fluweelengrot

Be guided through one of the oldest underground passages systems of South Limburg. With this marl many historical castles and churches were build. Be informed about the people who were hiding themselves in wars and discover their secret spots. Admire the beautiful paintings and sculptures in the cave. An impressive journey.
The temperature in the Velvet Cave is a constant 12 degrees. Please note here with your clothes.
