7 tips for an active and enjoyable late summer in the southern Netherlands
The ideal time for a brisk walk, a challenging bike ride or a fun event. We – Guido, Marjo and Luca from De Mechelerhof – are happy to share our favourite tips for late August and September.
1. Cycling with Guido – Amstel Gold Race loops & MH2D
''For those who enjoy cycling, the famous Amstel Gold Race loops start practically on our doorstep.
But don't forget to cross the border into the Ardennes or the Eifel for an extra challenge.
And on 20 & 21 September 2025, the Mergelheuvelland 2-day race (MH2D) is on the programme: less crowded than the AGR, but just as beautiful!''
2. Walking with Marjo – Route des Vins
''My late summer recommendation: the Route des Vins from Vijlen and Holset. You will walk through the vineyards of Limburg, past charming villages, and enjoy the views and a glass of local wine along the way. It is a delightful way to be active and sample the region.''
September wine month
September in the hills is all about wine: vineyards open their doors everywhere and at the end of September there is a buzz of activity during festive events such as the Wahlwiller Wine Festival. A perfect combination of exercise, experience and Burgundian enjoyment.
Discover the charm of the vineyards of South Limburg during an atmospheric walk with tastings at local wineries. The Wine Walk in Banholt on Sunday 7 September is a wonderful example of this.
3. Burgundian enjoyment with Luca – Vino Vaals
''On Sunday 14 September, the centre of Vaals will be transformed into one big wine festival: Vino Vaals. Regional winemakers, live music and a convivial atmosphere make this event an absolute must.''
4. Kurpark Classix in Aachen – 22 to 31 August 2025
A classical open-air festival, Kurpark Classix takes place in Aachen's atmospheric Kurpark. Enjoy beautiful music in the open air, just across the border.
5. Preuvenemint Maastricht – 28 to 31 August 2025
The largest outdoor culinary festival in the Netherlands is the Preuvenemint in Maastricht. Taste the most delicious dishes from top restaurants and enjoy the unique atmosphere on the Vrijthof.
6. Öpke Döpke in Stokhem – 6 & 7 September 2025
A true Limburg tradition since 1988: Öpke Döpke is a culinary walk through the beautiful countryside around Stokhem (between Gulpen and Wijlre). Choose a route of 4 to 12 kilometres and enjoy regional dishes at various stops along the way. Afterwards, a festive conclusion awaits you at the tent with live music, a chip van, bouncy castle and a bar. Limburg conviviality at its best.
7. Kleeberg Cross Mechelen – 13 & 14 September 2025
This spectacular cycling event, the Kleeberg Cross, takes place next to our park. Both top cyclo-cross riders and amateurs brave the challenging slopes of the Kleeberg.
What makes it even more special is that our Guido is part of the organisation and De Mechelerhof is a proud sponsor of this sporting event.
